We packed up in the rain at Curt Gowdy but arrived with the sunshine at Guernsey State Park. I was so grateful to be setting up the Art Yurt in the sun. It was still damp and needed an airing out! Once we got set up Dave and I set off to find inspiration. The light was late afternoon loveliness and I spent the next couple of hours exploring the park and taking reference pictures. I ended up settling on some of the first images I took at Cotton Cove campground.

How do the trails in Curt Gowdy get named? I don't know who Bonnie is but the trail named for her is quite lovely and just a short walk from the Visitor's Center. I found a good place to set up my chair and supplies just off the pathway. You do need to be aware as you hike around this park because there are small cactuses growing among the rocks and sage. Of course the view I wanted to draw forced me to set up in-between two clumps. After about an hour, I completed a small colored pencil drawing in proportion to the box I planned on using for this piece. Just as I was packing up and minding the cactus, a young boy raced up the trail, climbed a boulder, looked out over the valley and exclaimed, " Look, it's so beautiful!" Yes it is and I was feeling blessed to be here. It's a gorgeous day at Curt Gowdy State Park. One of 4 state parks that Dave and I will be visiting over the next 10 days as the 2025 Wyoming State Parks Artists in Residence. We are so pleased and honored to be this year's recipients. The "Arts in the Parks" program is a partnership between Wyoming State Parks and the Wyoming Arts Council. We will at Curt Gowdy till Monday Oct 22nd. Our campsite is Tumbleweeds #31. Look for the "Art Yurt." If the sign is up we are in the Yurt working or at the fire ring cooking something delicious for supper. Tonight's meal.... Dutch oven Personal Pizzas. If your are in the area Stop by and say Howdy! Travel, Discover, Memories.... these are the three words that best describe my latest series combining textile landscapes with their corresponding location on a state map. I've always loved maps not so much for their ability to guide me (my GPS does that best) but for the way they look. For the stories they tell about the contours of the land and the places people call home. If you can make it to Casper WY on August 7th, my Riding the Range Series will be on display at Art 321. It's also the night of the First Thursday Artwalk taking place throughout downtown Casper. Stop in, say hello and take in all the wonderful creative community that is ART 321! Hello Friends and Fellow Art enthusiasts!
It’s been a busy start to 2025 for me…. how about you? My husband Dave and I went on an epic road trip to attend the 20th anniversary CowgirlUP! show at the end of March. It was wonderful to see old friends and meet some new ones. If you are in Wickenburg stop by and see this wonderful show of all women artists interpreting the west. If you aren’t in the area you can also purchase art online. The exhibit runs through May 25th But wait, that’s not the end of the trip. From AZ we drove all the way to Brooksville FL to celebrate Dave’s parents 70th wedding anniversary! Wow and they still hold hands everyday. They have been a wonderful example of enduring love and we didn’t want to miss the party for anything. After almost a month on the road and visiting family, I am finally back in the studio and working hard on my next show which will be at Art 321 in Casper WY. My exhibit, Riding the Range- Travel Discovery & Memory, is part of the larger Weaving the Fabric of Time exhibit. Opening on August 7th at 5:30, there will be an artist talk (that’s me) at 6:30. The exhibit continues till Sept 27th. Finally, for those of you who are in or close to Cheyenne, our wonderful Laramie County Library is offering my 2 part Life Rings Workshop next month starting on May 4th and finishing on May 18th. Like everything at this fabulous library, it’s FREE! Sign up is through the Library. I hope everyone has a wonderful Spring and perhaps I will see you here at the studio, at a show or somewhere down the road. Thanks! Georgia It's snowy and windy outside but I'm in my studio everyday working on pieces for CowgirlUP! 2025. This March will be the 20th year for this wonderful show of all women Western artist at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenberg AZ. Warm weather, saguaro cactus and a great group of artists! Can't wait!
The show opens March 28th and continues till May 25th. If you are anywhere in the area during that time I encourage you to take in the show and this wonderful museum. See you there... "We’re highlighting the spirit and strength of Western women throughout history. Their stories shape ours as we follow in their footsteps, both in the arena and out in the world." Started in 1897, Cheyenne Frontier Day's is the "Daddy of "em All!" and this season its the Year of the Cowgirl! CFD is the world's biggest outdoor rodeo, attended by people from all over the world coming to experience the Western way of life. But... roping, riding and concerts isn't all you can experience. Open year around, the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, has permanent exhibits about the history of the rodeo and the city.. From July 19th to August 11th the main exhibit room is turned into a gallery boasting work from top notch western artists from around the nation. I am privileged to be one of them. The opening reception is July 18th and what a night it will be! Time to see the art, meet the people who create it and the patrons that support us. It's also a great time to see some fabulous Western outfits, boots, bling and all! Tickets can be purchased online at www.cfdartshow.com. Hope to see you there! Here's a sneak preview of one of the three pieces I have in the 2024 show. It's a view from our campsite at beautiful Buffalo Bill State Park.
If you 've been following my work you know it's made from fabric. Discarded clothing and household textiles are my palette. I also currently have work at the Cowgirl UP show in the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg AZ. They kindly had this to say on their website....... " Best of Show was awarded to new artist Georgia Rowswell for her mind-blowing textile artwork titled, “Thunderhead off Happy Jack Road”. Saguaro cactus, bougainvillea, grapefruit trees and art museums! Oh my! We aren't in Cheyenne anymore. In fact Dave and I arrived in Phoenix on Monday to relax and enjoy some of the sights and museums this area has to offer. Our first stop was the Heard Museum whose focus is American Indian and Southwestern art. We saw a fabulous exhibit of Maria Martinez's pottery and work by a contemporary artist, Brenda Mallory. She uses discarded objects to create her pieces and express her voice, ( I can relate).
We have been to the Desert Botanical Garden twice already. It's an amazing place with all kinds of plant life both familiar and other worldly! Plus the garden has a Chihuly sculpture and a show of Botero's work. Bonus! Tomorrow it's the Musical Instruments Museum and we hope to squeeze in the Phoenix Art Museum. So much to do before we head to Wickenburg for the main event, Cowgirl UP. The show opens this Friday and will go on till September. If your in the area be sure to catch it at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum "In 2006, Desert Caballeros Western Museum embraced a revolutionary idea: an annual exhibition showcasing the brightest contemporary female artists working in the Western genre. In the male-dominated world of Western Art, Cowgirl Up! turned the spotlight squarely on women’s voices and perspectives, serving up a new, deeper understanding of the American West. " * I am thrilled to be one of the invitees to the 2024 exhibition! The Desert Caballeros Western Museum is located in Wickenburg Az. Dave and I will be hopping in our Tesla in mid March to drive my artwork to the museum. We then plan to spend the week in between drop off and the opening on March 22nd touring the area and visiting family. Being a part of an out of state show is an expensive undertaking. Delivering the art, hotel and food expenses and shipping any unsold work back really adds up. The expense is worth it though for the opportunity to get your work in front of a new group of collectors, not to mention the networking and workshop events too! To help defray costs I applied for and received a Professional Development grant from the Wyoming Arts Council. Thank you to my state's awesome arts council! They have supported me in many different ways for the 16 years I have been a practicing artist in the great state of Wyoming! Also thank you to the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Wyoming State Legislature. So YEE Haw and Giddy UP! The show is on exhibit till September 1st. If you're in the area consider taking in the exhibition and supporting the girls! Guess I better get a pair of cowgirl boots! *quote from the Desert Caballeros Western Museum website 8:00pm Friday evening October 6th... and the Cheyenne First Friday Artwalk just finished. We put away the reception food, closed our gallery door and hopped in the Tesla. Packed in the back was just one piece of art. If you're following us on our You Tube channel, Two Artists in a Tesla, you know that the Tesla and my packing skills are capable of getting 40 pieces of art in that car. This time just one very special piece of art was safely resting in the back of the car. At 58" x 33" it did take up a lot of space! After 106 hours I had finally completed my commission and it was time to drive the San Juan Island piece to its new home in Genoa NV.
Not only did Dave and I get to meet Dianne and her husband Chris but we also took time to see Yosemite, Bristlecone Pine National Forest, Travertine hot springs, the Annular Eclipse and so much more, (we have a bunch of videos to edit for our You Tube channel). I've always said one of the best things about being an artist is the places and faces it takes me to. This trip did all that and more! |
