Working on Hot Yellowstone #10

11/19/2015

I have been making good progress on Hot Yellowstone #10 while camped out at Clay Paper Scissors Gallery. The large windows and open space make working there a pleasure. I am about a third of the way finished and hope to be halfway by 6:00 this evening. Each of the Yellowstone pieces have featured some interesting and some personal fabrics. # 6 has purple strips taken from one of my Mother's work shirt. I developed an early love for fibers from my Mother who taught me how to sew and appreciate handmade and well crafted things. Which brings me to the dress in the photo. I made this while  in college at Seattle Pacific University. I was taking a fibers class and decided to make the Afghan Nomad Dress, Folkwear Pattern #107 embellished with batik. I wore this dress during college and into married life and then tucked it away. Years later my daughter Abby started wearing it in college and after graduating in 2010 she took the dress with her on a 9 month teaching assignment in China. She called it her "signature dress" and wore it till it was fading and falling apart. The Nomad dress has now found its final resting place in Hot Yellowstone #10.
Today is my last day at the gallery on Carey Ave in Cheyenne so if you are downtown between 2:00 and 6:00 stop by and see how far I have gotten.

Pixar proves Garfield wrong!

When I first moved to Wyoming a friend sent me a link to a Garfield spoof about Wyoming. It seemed kind of true at the time since most of my family including my kids didn't have a clue about my new home state! Well no more! Hollywood is putting Wyoming on the map with Pixar's new movie, "The Good Dinosaur". Here's what a Nov. 15th excerpt from the Casper Star newspaper had to say about Pixar's visit:
Pixar artists are eager to talk about how Wyoming’s landscape inspired them for “The Good Dinosaur.” Some have already shared the awe they felt when they saw the Tetons, the Grand Prismatic Spring and other features for the first time.“We turned around a corner and I just gasped because I was just struck with the beauty of the color” of the multicolored Yellowstone National Park spring, Sharon Calahan, Pixar’s director of photography for lighting, told the Star-Tribune.
In celebration of Wyoming's geology and paleontology and the release of the movie, the University of Wyoming's Geological Museum is putting on an art show. My Hot Yellowstone #6 will be included in this inaugural show.  The intersection of art and science...I like it!
